Toe Up Spring Forward Socks
(For Ravelry)
Posted on March 6, 2009
As promised, here is my toe-up adaptation of Linda Welch’s excellent Spring Forward.
This is basically my working backwards through Linda’s pattern, using a magic loop cast on (2.25mm circ), Cat Bhordi’s gusset increases ingeniously knitted into the sole of the sock, and a short row heel based on that of Cookie A’s excellent Baudelaire socks.
I’ve used this pattern with great success, and I hope that other’s enjoy it too.
Requirements: Spring Forward sock pattern by Linda Welch
2.25mm circ needle
4ply sock yarn around 360 yards/329m
stitch marker to mark beginning of row
darning needle to finish.
Cast on
On a magic loop – cast on 18 stitches.
Increase 1 stitch at the each end (4 stitches) every row for 4 rows (34 stitches)
Knit one row
Increase 1 stitch at each end ( 4 stitches) every alternate row 7 times (66 stitches)
Knit one row.
33 stitches for sole, 33 for instep.
Begin lace pattern on instep, knit sole.
Knit 2 and a half repeats of waving lace and begin gusset on row thirteen of lace by shifting the first stitch of the row onto the needle holding the sole stitches – 32 on the instep, 34 on the sole. Place a marker in the middle of the sole stitches (17 stitches in). m1 stitch on either side of the marker on alternate rounds, keeping the instep in pattern. Increase to 86 stitches (32 instep, 54 sole).
